National Flag of Scotland (St. Andrew's Cross)
The Scottish National flag is the cross of St. Andrew, also known as the
Saltire. It is said to be one of the oldest national flags of any country,
dating back at least to the 12th century. The official use of this flag,
as a national emblem, dates from the 16th Century.
Tradition suggests that St. Andrew (an apostle of Jesus in the Christian
religion, and the patron Saint of Scotland) was put to death by the Romans
on a cross of this shape.
The following is from the St Andrew's Society in Scotland, regarding the colour and dimension of the flag: "The blue field of the Saltire should be bright azure in harmony with the legend, but not pale or weak. The dark blue used in the Union Flag is too dark. Although there is no definitive colour codification, the Society believes that the proper lighter blue should be close to Pantone 300U. The proportions are not fixed, but the ratio 5:4 (length to height) is suitable."
