Skull & Crossbones
The Jolly Roger (also known as Captain Death, or King Death among pirates)
was the icon of piracy and a banner of pirate solidarity.
When calling on a ship to surrender Buccaneers would often raise a red
flag along with their national flag. The red flag
meant that no quarter would be given if the ship offered resistance. This flag
was called joli rouge which, in English became
Jolly Roger. The name remained when the flag switched from red to black.
The name seemed appropriate since
Old Roger was a British term for the Devil, and a vagabond was often
called a Roger, which was a corruption of rogue. The term may also have been
used for the vagrants of the sea.
The skull and cross bones, or death's head has been used among
European armies since the 1600s. The first use of it on a flag
dates from the early 1700s. The most
common Jolly Roger is the Skull and Cross Bones, usually with the bones
crossing under the skull.
