Coulter's Candy
|
Album: Children's Songs
Album: The Flowers of Scotland
|
Traditional
This is surely one of the most widely sung lullabies in the Scottish repertoire. Mr. Coulter wandered the streets selling his 'sweeties' from a basket which he carried on his head. Some say that as he sold his famous candy he sang the chorus to this song.

Chorus
Ally bally ally bally bee
Sittin' on yer mammy's knee
Greetin for a wee bawbee
Tae buy some Coulter's candy
Times are very hard the noo
Faither's signin' on the broo
But your mammy's got a penny for you
Tae buy some Coulter's candy
Puir wee soul you're lookin' awful thin
A puckle o' banes covered o'er wi' skin
Soon you'll be gettin' a wee double chin
From sookin' Coulter's candy
Here is a penny my bonnie wee man
Run doon the road as fast as ye can
Gie up your money to the Coulter's man
For a poke o' Coulter's candy
Come on in, my bonnie wee lamb
Seven o' clock and your playin's done
Open your eyes to the mornin' sun
And a poke of Coulter's candy
