Aura Lee
|
Album: Songs of the South: Bagpipes and Banjos
|
Traditional
Aura Lee was written over one hundred years ago by W. W. Fosdick, the music is by George R. Poulton. The song was not well received at first but gained popularity in the 1880's as a favorite for college glee clubs and barber-shop quartets. Because of its lyric sentiment and beautiful harmonizing possibilities this song became more widely known and appreciated in the following years.
|
As the blackbird in the spring
'Neath the willow tree
Sat and piped, I heard him sing
Sing of Aura Lee.
Aura Lee! Aura Lee!
Maid of golden hair,
Sunshine came along with thee,
And swallows in the air.
On her cheek the rose was born,
'Twas music when she spake;
In her eyes the rays of morn
With sudden splendor break.
Aura Lee! Aura Lee!
Maid of golden hair,
Sunshine came along with thee,
And swallows in the air.
