A Highland Lad My Love Was Born
Also called: John Highlandman
|
Album: There Was A Lad
Album: Playing Nice Together
|
Lyrics: Robert Burns (1785)
This song appears in Burns' cantata "The Jolly Beggars". The words were originally written to the old air "O Gin Ye Were Dead Gudeman", which probably suggested the more modern air of "The White Cockade", the two tunes being similar. The tune "The White Cockade" is now used for this song. This modern air is also found in Aird's collection, 1784, under the name "The Ranting Highlandman".

A Highland lad my love was born
The lowland laws he held in scorn
But he still was faithful to his clan
My gallant braw John Highlandman
Chorus:
Sing hey, my braw John Highlandman
Sing ho, my braw John Highlandman
There's no' a lad in a' the lan'
Was match wi' my John Highlandman
With his philabeg and his tartan plaid
And his good claymore doon by his side
The ladies' hearts he did trepan
My gallant braw John Highlandman
Chorus
They banished him beyond the sea
But ere the bud was on the tree
Adoon my cheeks the pearls they ran
Embracing my John Highlandman
